Young bio-engineer develops first Belgian alcohol-free gin
In their search for alcohol-free aperitifs, more and more (star) restaurants are turning to Nona June, an alcohol-free variant of gin developed by a young woman from Ghent.
When 25-year-old Charlotte Matthys finished her bio-engineering studies two years ago and took the step into working life, she had more budget to spend in cafes or restaurants. But with a busy full-time job, alcohol was often not an option, and then the choice was limited to sodas or very sugary mocktails. ‘I found it so unfortunate that there was little special or tasty without alcohol, that after ten months I decided to quit my job to develop an alcohol-free spirit myself,’ Charlotte says….

That idea didn’t come completely out of the blue . The Ghent native has long had a passion for herbs and could also use her background as a bio-engineer. The fact that it became an alcohol-free variant of gin was also no surprise to those who know her. ‘Gin and tonic is my favorite drink. And besides, the distillation process interested me the most, precisely because it’s not so simple.’
